2nd Edition, Where Was God (Big Citiy Lies/Small Town Secrets)

Chapter Three

Angelica stepped inside the vacant elevator at Spitzer Financial Firm. She pressed the button for the twelfth floor where her new assignment awaited her.  She leaned her tired body against the steel guardrails as the doors closed. Even the smooth, melodic sounds of jazz bellowing from overhead couldn’t drown out the voice of her high-strung, over-the-top boss, Lance Swann as it invaded her thoughts on the ride up.

The last thing she wanted was to take on a new assignment. But Lance barged into her office more than a week ago with what he deemed another big story that needed her undivided attention. She could hear his flamboyant voice ringing clearly in her head. “Hope, CBN News didn’t earn Best Broadcasting Station of the year by sitting on our butts.” Then he’d pour on the flattery with, “You’re the best reporter this station has. The others are just too darned soft. I can trust you to get down and dirty to find the truth.” He was right about that. She took her job seriously, sometimes a little too seriously, and often leaving enemies in the aftermath.

She was blindsided when her overzealous boss assigned her to investigate Jasion McCoy without consulting her first. She had planned to take a long overdue vacation, which Lance knew she deserved, after uncovering the teacher’s sex scandal that rocked the Port City school system last month. She had her own problems to sort out. As usual, Lance had thrown a monkey wrench in those plans when he’d handed her a folder containing Mr. McCoy’s profile.

She pulled a photo from the folder of a strikingly handsome young man; she’d remembered seeing on an infomercial. After the Procter Investment Firm scandal, people had begun withdrawing their investments from local financial firms in Port City. He had encouraged the public that it was safe to reinvest in their future and not allow one company’s mistake to scare them away.

Angelica studied the photo of Jasion McCoy with awareness. She brushed her hands across the glossy image toward his eyes and then down to the most perfect set of lips she’d ever seen. He didn’t look like a crook, but neither did the rest of those high corporate thieves who’d scammed billions from their clients. Well Mr. McCoy, I hope you’re ready for me. I don’t take kindly to those who take advantage of the innocent, no matter how handsome they are, she thought, trying to convince herself that his good looks wouldn’t interfere with her doing her job.

Ding. The elevator alerted that she’d reached her destination. The sound pulled her back to the present. While exiting, she tried, refocusing on her purpose for being there. She proceeded down a narrow hallway in search of the man whose photo had her counting down the seconds until their meeting. She arrived at his office door, where a gold plate bore his name in bold black letters. Before she could knock, a tall, handsome, and immaculately dressed man charged out the door, nearly knocking her over.

The gorgeous creature leaning into her, quick reflexes and a strong masculine hold around her waist broke her fall. The last thing she needed was a concussion from landing on the hard ceramic floor beneath her.

“Ma’am, are you all right? I’m sorry. I didn’t see you,” He apologized, holding her securely in his arms.

Seconds ticked before Angelica could speak. There was a sense of familiarity about the man holding her in his arms. She’d seen those soft, brown, caring eyes before, but where? The only placed she’d seen him was in the photo and on television.

“You need to watch where you’re going, Sir,” she scolded, breaking out of his strong grip. Straightening her oversized, black blazer, she sported an annoyed look. “I could’ve been seriously hurt.”

She was more than okay. It wasn’t every day that a handsome, six-foot-three─ give or take an inch─hunk, stormed out an office and held her in his arms. Too bad, the hardnosed-reporter inside her, wouldn’t allow her vulnerability or gratitude show.

“You’re right. I should’ve been more careful.” He peered over her shoulders at his secretary’s empty desk. “May I help you?”

“Yes. I am looking for a Mr. Jasion McCoy.” She knew exactly who he was. The sight of him had taken what breath she had left. She tried to gather her composure in light of the awkward moment they’d just shared. Focus. Focus. Focus. She screamed within herself.

His photo and television infomercials didn’t do him justice. Live and in living color was much better. His bronze, chiseled face and beautiful full lips surrounded by a neatly trimmed goatee were enough to make her want to fall again, just so he’d catch her. There wasn’t a flaw to be found, and if there were, he hid them well.

Dateless for more than two years hadn’t diminished her womanly abilities to scan a man from head to toe in a matter of seconds. Her skills were still on high alert. His tan designer suit complemented his toned body, drawing attention to all the right places.

“I’m your man. Sorry…my apologies, that didn’t come out the right way.” Stumbling on his words, he extended his hand to her for a formal introduction. “I’m Jasion McCoy. And you are?”

“Angelica Hope, from CBN News. The station’s secretary scheduled me to meet with you at ten-thirty this morning.”

“Come into my office and let me check my schedule for today.”

She followed closely behind, checking out the full view of his masculine physique. Not too bad. Not too bad. His wife is one lucky woman to have a man like him to come home to. I thought Idris Elba was the only man who oozed sex appeal, but I was wrong.

“Have a seat while I verify the time with my secretary. I hope she’s returned from her morning break.” He turned, gesturing towards a black leather chair near his desk. “Ms. Kennedy is good at keeping me on track.” He dialed her extension, placing the phone on loudspeaker. “Ms. Kennedy.”

“Yes, Mr. McCoy,” she responded in a high-spirited voice.

“Do you have me scheduled to meet with a, Mrs.─”

“It’s Ms.,” Angelica interrupted. Why did I do that? I could slap myself. I hope he doesn’t get the wrong impression.

“I’m sorry. Do you have me scheduled to meet with Ms. Angelica Hope from CBN News at ten-thirty this morning? I could’ve sworn it was for tomorrow.”

“Hold, please, while I check.” She returned, “Yes, Mr. McCoy, I reminded you of the appointment first thing this morning.

“Thanks, Ms. Kennedy. That will be all for now.” He disconnected the call. “I apologize for my oversight, Ms. Hope. It’s been chaos around here ever since investigators stormed into my office, confiscating my clients’ portfolios.”

“Your boss, Mr. Lexington, contacted the station and briefed us on the matter.”

“If you don’t mind, can we discuss this over a late breakfast?” he asked, slipping on his suit jacket. “I’m famished.”

“I have lunch plans in a couple of hours. We could reschedule for tomorrow, if you’d like.” She couldn’t believe those words had escaped her lips. Postponing a meeting of this nature wasn’t in her vocabulary.  She had to be insane or weak to the magnetic powers transmitting from the handsome man standing before her.

“No, I prefer to get this over with as quickly as possible,” he snapped.

“I don’t know about quickly, Mr. McCoy. We’re stuck together like Siamese twins. After the case, we can both go our separate ways. Where I come from, stealing is a serious crime.” No one took that type of tone with her, even if he did look as if he’d stepped off the pages of GQ magazine.

“Whoa. Hold on, Ms. Don’t come in here making false accusations. I know Mr. Lexington prefers that CBN News cover the story because of their network’s reputation for accuracy. However, I won’t hesitate to boot you up out of here.” He shot back.

“Look. I apologize for making false assumptions. In my business you’re innocent until proven guilty.” Her reporter instincts warned that things were going to get worse before the case was over, and sticking her foot in her mouth wasn’t helping. “Okay, let’s go and discuss the events leading up to the disappearance of your clients’ assets. Maybe we can put our heads together and figure it out before the news get out to the public. After the Procter Investment Firm closed its doors due to money laundering schemes, the last thing you need is for Spitzer’s investors to begin panicking.”

****

The company’s cafeteria rush hour was over and now had dwindled to a handful of employees, allowing Jasion to speak free from prying eyes. Turning his attention to the beautiful, feisty reporter sitting across the table from him, he made a mental note to switch from watching BCB News to CBN News. She was stunning.

Feelings of déjà vu crept up his spine as he locked eyes with her across the table. Her creamy, mocha skin and hypnotizing, brown eyes were enough to paralyze any man who looked into them, but her attitude needed a major overhaul.

“Is there anything else you need to know, Ms. Hope?” he asked impatiently.

“For now,” she said emphatically. “I don’t want to overload you with questions today.”

Not that he’d mind. He could sit and gaze at her all morning. It was her tongue lashing that he could do without. “Good, because my brain is fried,” he laughed.

She kept a stony face.

If we’re going to be working closely together, I pray she loosens up, or communication will be like pulling teeth out of a lion’s mouth.

“We’ve only scratched the surface, Mr. McCoy. I will be working directly with Port City detectives.” She took a sip of her coffee. “If you cooperate with me, I’ll do all I can to help prove your innocence. But, if not, I’ll do everything in my power to see that you end up behind bars.”

“Ouch. That cut and dry, huh?” Jasion asked, steadying the cup of coffee in his shaky hand. The last place he wanted to end up was jail, especially for a crime he didn’t commit.

“Yes. So, do we have an understanding?”

“Yes, ma’am, we do.”

Jasion could tell by the tone of her voice that she meant business. He hoped as time passed that the five-foot-six beauty would ease up on the threats. His nerves were already working in overdrive, and her straight-to-the-point attitude weren’t helping matters.

The reputation he’d spent years building was crashing down around him. God had promised, through His word, to never leave him or forsake him. But he had never felt more forsaken than now and questioned how was he going to get out of this mess?

REFLECTION

There was a business executive who was deep in debt and could see no way out.

Creditors were closing in on him. Suppliers were demanding payment. He sat on the park bench, head in hands, wondering if anything could save his company from bankruptcy.

Suddenly an old man appeared before him. “I can see that something is troubling you,” he said.

After listening to the executive’s woes, the old man said, “I believe I can help you.”

He asked the man his name, wrote out a check, and pushed it into his hand saying, “Take this money. Meet me here exactly one year from today, and you can pay me back at that time.”

Then he turned and disappeared as quickly as he had come.

The business executive saw in his hand a check for $500,000, signed by John D. Rockefeller, then one of the richest men in the world!

“I can erase my money worries in an instant!” he realized. But instead, the executive decided to put the uncashed check in his safe. Just knowing it was there might give him the strength to work out a way to save his business, he thought.

With renewed optimism, he negotiated better deals and extended terms of payment. He closed several big sales. Within a few months, he was out of debt and making money once again.

Exactly one year later, he returned to the park with the uncashed check. At the agreed-upon time, the old man appeared. But just as the executive was about to hand back the check and share his success story, a nurse came running up and grabbed the old man.

“I’m so glad I caught him!” she cried. “I hope he hasn’t been bothering you. He’s always escaping from the rest home and telling people he’s John D. Rockefeller.”

And she led the old man away by the arm.

The astonished executive just stood there, stunned. All year long he’d been wheeling and dealing, buying and selling, convinced he had half a million dollars behind him.

Suddenly, he realized that it wasn’t the money, real or imagined, that had turned his life around. It was his newfound self-confidence that gave him the power to achieve anything he went after.

Eleanor Roosevelt once said: You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.'

“For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”  (Jer 29:11)

The Kitchen Dance, By Geri G. Taylor

According to Rene Descartes, no two bodies can occupy the same space at the same time and any physical motion of a body involves moving other bodies from the space they occupy. In my first work of contemporary fiction, Joule and Allen create their own movements in THE KITCHEN DANCE.

Joule Dalton, a successful interior designer with a prestigious architectural firm, lived her life choreographed by her loved ones until a tragedy forces her to learn her own steps. Allen Brooks has endured his own share of manipulations and all his hard work and sacrifice has left him with nothing. He wears his troubles like the too large overcoat he picked up at a mission while living on the streets. This coat brings them together in an unexpected way. Joule takes the misfortunate Allen into her home in hopes of turning his life around. She gives him a place to live, a job, even introduces him to her wealthy friends. What she does not give him is her trust. This he must earn. The two combine their dreams and create a wonderful relationship. Then Allen gets a call that will challenge his sense of responsibility. He makes a choice, one that Joule cannot begrudge. Allen struggles with his decision while Joule goes back to her old life until they both realize what they really want.

About The Author

I wrote, actually, drew my first storybook during my preschool years about a troll who lived under a bridge, as trolls tend to do, in an unkempt cave. One day, a cute little lady troll came along and changed his life completely. He fell in love and allowed her to transform him into a kind gentleman who lived in a clean and lovely home, albeit still under a bridge, as trolls tend to do.

In many films, writers are stereotypically portrayed seated at their uncluttered desk inserting a fresh sheet of paper into their typewriter and then staring dismally at the glaring white emptiness of the page before them. I rarely look at the blankness before me with dismay. The stories are always there. I just wish I could type as fast as the story unfolds and not make so many typos. Even though the tap-tap of old-fashioned typewriter keys are a melodic symphony to a writer's ear most writers these days open a word processing program on a laptop and hit "file" then "new" and their fingers dance to the dull clicks of their keyboards. Either way, I love that sound!

My life as of late has not been ideal for writing and the characters of my stories nag at me like Luigi Pirandello's Sei Personaggi in Cerca d'Autore (Six Characters in Search of an Author) at the most inconvenient times wanting to know why their stories have not been written. I enjoy performing on stage and the process of acting in films but I owe it to my characters to return to the dull clicks of my laptop because I am the only one who can write their stories. I look forward to other people reading them.

Reviews:

Sheila L. Jackson
The Kitchen dance is an amazing, touching story. Please don't let the title fool you. Geri Taylor does a fabulous job at keeping her readers guessing. I find it hard to write a review without giving away the entire story. After reading, The Kitchen, you will walk away with hope in humanity. This book is not your average romance novel, there are life lessons, mystery, and heart-tugging moments throughout each page. Please don't judge this book by its cover.

A uniquely told love story, this book was. To me, it was a very touching and intriguing read. I loved the sense of morality Geri shows as her character Joule helps out a fellow man by taking him in off the streets.

Like with anything in life, a little bit of good can go a long way, but in any respect you also have the bad that comes along with it. I loved the flow of how ones past and indiscretions in life can come to haunt them as they try so desperately to weave a prosperous future. These issues are relatable, and fixed within the storyline so beautifully with a cast of characters you cant help but to embrace.

The characters were well defined as their tale of finding oneself and love developed through this endearing read.

Very well done Geri.

I enjoyed this story. It was told with twists and turns that we're not always predictable. I enjoyed each character and the relationships between all. With a smidgen of titillation, I couldn't wait to finish! Read closely for the dance!

Kitchen Dance is by Geri G Taylor. It is a fabulous book. I would definitely recommend this to any of my friends. Once you get into the story, it takes a hold on you and doesn’t let go. It is one that I stayed up late, late, late to read along with a box of tissues. The writing is well done. The characters are so realistic it seems like they are your fest friends or worst enemies. The plot seems so simple; but it explodes and goes in a totally different direction.

Joule Dalton is an Interior Designer for The West Agency. Once the architects get finished, she puts in the design portions before it is presented to the prospective investors or buyers. She met and married her husband here but he was murdered two years ago. Her best friend, Elaine (who is also her boss’s wife) keeps trying to match her up with various men with some hysterical results. Phillip West, her boss, is very pleased with her work and keeps putting her in charge of larger projects.

Before she went to work for West, she lived in a warehouse with 5 other people, rather like a commune. Daisy did a lot of the cooking with the others helping out. It was here Joule learned the “kitchen dance” and the value of true relationships. When her boyfriend left without telling her, she changed her way of living and went to work for West. However, she kept her work with the homeless and other charities. She had faith in people and usually she was rewarded with their friendship. She was wrong in the two men who she and her husband hired to help them renovate the warehouse as they were the ones who killed him. Still she continued to help people.

As she was returning home from a cocktail party where she presented the latest project, she came into contact with Allen Brooks when he returned her purse which she had dropped. He was an out of work carpenter whose truck and tools had been stolen. She noticed him because he was wearing her husband’s coat which she had just given to charity that morning. She invited him to the diner for dinner and later asked him to stay overnight in the Loft where she lived. Her self-appointed guardian, Roosevelt whom she had also saved, disagreed but since she was adamant went up with them and talked with Allen until he felt comfortable leaving him alone with Joule.

Allen reluctantly agreed to spend the night but eagerly accepted her invitation to shower. He might be homeless; but he was a proud man who had nothing left but his integrity. However in the shower, he began to wonder about her. Why did she do so much for him? Why did she invite a strange man to spend the night? Who was Roosevelt and what was he to her? He intended to spend the night, try to fix her elevator, and go on his way.

The next day, Joule invited him to the cabin her parents had left her in order to hire him to finish the renovations that had been started. She didn’t know what she wanted to do with the cabin; but it did need repairing. He agreed but asked her permission to use her phone to call his kids and later to use her Bronco to go see them. His ex-wives were not allowing him to see his kids.
Was Joule right in trusting Allen? Would he do what he said he would or would he turn out to be like the men who killed her husband? Would he rob her at the cabin and disappear? She takes him on Faith.

Then the book takes a major and unexpected turn. It is fascinating .

I really enjoyed The Kitchen Dance by Geri G. Taylor. This contemporary romance fiction kept me glued to its pages and guessing what was going to happen next.

The author did an excellent job of developing a storyline that was both realistic and believable. It was full of plot twist that kept me reading and wondering what was going to happen next. I liked the fact it was fast paced and did not drag. This made for a great read.

One of the great points of the story was how it was told from both of the lead characters prospective. By switching back and forth, telling their story, the story came alive.

Geri G. Taylor did a good job of creating characters that were easy to identify with and follow. Each of the lead characters was strong but the author clearly showed their vulnerability. This made it easy to relate to them.

I really enjoyed reading The Kitchen Dance by Geri G. Taylor and I highly recommend this book.

What Prayer Can Do: In His Sight

When a teen's eyes are injured in a chemical explosion, his prayers receive an answer.

By Mel Ely, San Diego, California

Once we were in college, the kids from my church’s high school youth group only saw each other in the summertime. We’d been looking forward to a get-together by the lake that day in 1952. So we were surprised when one of us, Harley, didn’t show. Finally our pastor arrived to explain what had happened.

“Harley’s had an accident,” he said. “I don’t know all of the details—I think he was working with some chemicals and there was an explosion. The doctors have bandaged his eyes. They’re not sure he’ll ever be able to see again.”

All of us prayed nonstop over the next few days. I hated to think of Harley losing his sight. He was so smart and talented, with so much to give and his whole life in front of him.

God, please heal him, I asked.

Finally the bandages came off. Harley was okay! His vision was restored.

Life soon sent us all in different directions. I moved to California. Harley stayed in Oklahoma. Occasionally my mom gave me updates on what he was doing. I knew he went to medical school and became an ophthalmologist. Then I lost track of him for years.

One day I decided to see if I could find out what had happened to Harley. I looked him up on the internet and learned that J. Harley Galusha had become a true innovator in the field of vision correction, pioneering new techniques and procedures. He traveled all over the world—to Africa, India, South America—offering his services for free and training eye doctors.

Forty years after that long-ago summer day at the lake, I reconnected with my old friend.

“I’ll never forget how hard we all prayed for you to be healed,” I said.

“I prayed too,” said Harley. “But not just for healing. I asked God what I should do with my life, whatever happened. By the time I left the hospital I knew I was going to dedicate myself to restoring the sight of others.” God had answered both our prayers and through them, no doubt, the prayers of many others.

Choices/The Enemy Whithin

By Sheila L. Jackson

Wake up world! Can’t you see what Satan is doing? He is poisoning the minds of people everywhere.
The devil is glamorizing sin by making everything appear sexy and seductive, fun and exciting. He makes sex, adultery, gambling, homosexuality, and drugs seem attractive to all classes and races of people. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are strong enough to fight these temptations. Many such as you thought the same, and yet they found themselves traveling down the road of destruction.

Satan makes you believe that God’s way is dull, boring, out of style, and too strict to follow. But
know that is one of his many traps. People from all walks of life have become addicted to drugs and gambling because Satan made it look so desirable, and they believe like so many others that they could not be hooked. Beware; if you are not following God’s way, you will become caught up in his schemes as well.

There are many choices that we make in this life, right and wrong, good and evil, heaven or hell. God is so awesome in that He allows us to make these choices in our lives. Yes, He tells us which choices to make, but He leaves the decision up to us.

Heaven can be entered only through the narrow gate! The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide enough for all the multitudes who choose its easy way. But the Gateway to Life is small, and the road is narrow, and only a few ever find it. (Matthew 7:13–14, TLB)

Making excuses for our choices in life—we all have them; no one is exempt. If you look at some of the horror stories in the newspapers and on the television, you will find that many of the convicted criminals had an excuse for why they commit-ted such crimes. I have seen in some cases where reporters that interviewed family members of the convicted persons ask, “How did their life get so off track?” and usually the family’s claim is that “they are products of their environment.” But God never created any of us to be violent; we choose the way we want to be portrayed in life.

Men will never let you forget the wrong path that you have traveled down, but God throws it in the sea of forgetfulness, never to remember it again. Jesus, the precious Lamb of God, accepts you, faults and all. Do not let anyone keep you from the one that really loves you. Satan will use you up and then toss you to the wolves. The Father cares so deeply for you in that He knows the number of hairs that you have upon your head.

It is time now to make the right choice; the devil has fooled you long enough. One day that so call party will end, and after Satan has drained you of all spirituality, you will belong to him forever. Learn his tricks, and rebuke them when you see them coming. It’s dangerous to test the waters because if you cannot swim, you will surely drown. You can-not win on Satan’s territory because once the spirit of God has left; you have nothing to protect yourself with. God’s Word is the sword, and without it you are defenseless.

As Dorothy said in the Wizard of Oz, “there is no place like home.” If you have lost your way, ask for the directions that will lead you back on the narrow and straight path.

Dorothy searched diligently for the great and powerful Wizard. She was told to follow the yellow brick road. At the end of her journey, she found him, but only to be disappointed when she discovered he had no powers. He put on this big charade before the people about how great he was, but it was all an act. He had insecurities himself. Dorothy had to realize that she had the power deep inside of her all along.

Do not be fooled by the outward appearances of men. It may seem as though they have it all together on the exterior, but deep inside they are weak and frail. Satan wants to paint us a picture that he is great and powerful, but that is not true; the power lies within you. Make the right choice, and get back on the straight and narrow road. There is no condemnation for returning, but there are consequences for not reverting. Dorothy said it best— “there is no place like home!”

Choose you this day whom you will serve!
